Chandigarh : The Punjab Congress today accused the SAD-BJP government of shielding the big names in the Rs 33-crore pesticide scam.

After a meeting at the office of the state bureau of investigation in Mohali, senior Congress leader Sunil Jakhar said AIG Hardyal Singh Mann told him that an investigation into the case was in progress and the challan would be filed soon.

Jakhar was accompanied by fellow MLAs Balbir Sidhu, Parminder Singh Pinki and Gurkirat Singh Kotli,

Yesterday, the Bathinda police filed a challan in a corruption case against former Director, Agriculture, Mangal Singh Sandhu. In the case registered on September 15, 2005, Sandhu is accused of accepting a bribe of Rs 8.5 lakh from a pesticide dealer in Rama Mandi (Bathinda).

“The state government is out to hush up the case as Sandhu has himself said that the directions for the purchase of the pesticide came from the offices of the Chief Minister and the Agriculture Minister,” said Jakhar.

The case was registered on a complaint filed by former Special Secretary, Agriculture, Suresh Kumar, alleging fraud in the purchase of Oberon pesticide worth Rs 33 crore in October 2015.
