DINANAGAR (GURDASPUR): Congress Legislature Party chief and leader of the Opposition in Punjab assembly Charanjit Singh Channi on Wednesday called upon chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to honour the commitments made to families of martyrs.

On the first anniversary of the Dinanagar terrorist attack, Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi (extreme left) honouring families of the victims in Gurdaspur on Wednesday.

Channi was speaking during a Congress workers’ meeting at Dinanagar, on the first anniversary of the terrorist attack on a police station here. Channi demanded government jobs to the next of kin of those who died or were injured in the attack.

During the function organised by Dinanagar MLA Aruna Chaudhary, Channi also honoured the families of Gulam Rasool and Nirmala Devi, who died in the attack. All the injured civilians — Kamlajit Matharu, Sarvjit, Varun Bhagat, Darshan and Satpal Singh — were also honoured.

“All his life, Badal has practised the politics of opportunism and deceit, and has made false promises to the people. However, he can’t treat families of martyrs in the same way. Why should it take one year for the Badal government to award the President’s Police Medal posthumously to superintendent of police Baljit Singh, who laid down his life while fighting terrorists at the Dinanagar police station,”said the Congress leader.

Blaming deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who also holds the home portfolio, for the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab, Channi questioned why was the Dinanagar attack investigation handed over to a neutral central agency on the lines of the Pathankot airbase attack.

“Despite formation of three investigation teams in the past one year, the Punjab Police probe has made no headway,”said Channi, seeking an explanation from Sukhbir.
