Chamkaur Sahib : Punjab unit of Congress on Sunday said its manifesto for the state Assembly polls, which are due next year, will be released on October 1 and will lay a roadmap for creation of a “new Punjab”.
“Congress will present a vision for the youth, education, unemployment and health sector, improving the fiscal deficit and more opportunities for the new industry to invest in Punjab,” party leader Manpreet Badal said while addressing a programme here.
He said the sacrifice made by freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and his vision will be incorporated in the party manifesto, which will be launched on October 1.
Underscoring unemployment as a major issue which needed to be addressed immediately, he said, “Congress will give a road map for creation of a ‘new Punjab’ with time-bound commitment to the people of Punjab.”
Manpreet exuded confidence about Congress forming the next government in the state under the leadership of Amarinder Singh.
Addressing the gathering, Youth Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja hit out at the ruling Badal family in Punjab and cautioned people against AAP’s “false promises”. “The youth of Punjab have to fight the Badals just like Shaheed Udham Singh fought against the Britishers. Today the Badals are registering false cases against innocent Congressmen who raise their voice against them. The people of Punjab will have to initiate Jang-e-Azadi against this Badal regime,” Warring said.
Targeting Aam Aadmi Party, Raja said people should not get befooled by the “false promises” which AAP was making to the voters of Punjab.
Leader of Opposition in the state assembly and local MLA Charanjit Singh Channi lashed out at the Akali government for lack of development in Chamkaur Sahib.
“Badals have deliberately ignored development in this constituency. All the roads leading to the constituency are in bad shape, not a single penny has been granted for any new project in this constituency in the last 10 years,” he alleged.
AAP to announce first list of candidates for Punjab polls
Chandigarh : Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will soon release the first list of its 23 candidates for the upcoming Punjab assembly polls after getting a nod from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Political Affairs Committee (PAC), the party said on Sunday.
AAP volunteers have recommended nearly 500 names of the probables for the 23 assembly seats.
The party’s screening committee of Punjab has short listed nearly 130 names, on an average five to seven from each constituency, and forwarded it to the PAC, the party said in a statement.
The screening committee included AAP’s national spokesperson Sanjay Singh, Faridkot MP Sadhu Singh, Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann, Punjab convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur and national organisation building secretary Durgesh Pathak.
AAP, which won four Lok Sabha seats from Punjab while contesting its maiden general elections in 2014, is eyeing to wrest power from the SAD-BJP alliance in 2017 assembly polls.
State reels under dog ‘terror’: Cong leader
Jalandhar: A senior Congress leader on Sunday said stray dogs pose a serious threat to people and claimed that canines tend to attack children and other hapless domesticated cattle after finding them alone.
Punjab Congress vice-president Satnam Singh Kainth claimed that stray dogs generally form a group and attack cattle and children, sometimes fatally, as they are the most vulnerable. He said the government is ignorant on the issue. “If SAD and BJP leaders are serious on the issue then why have not a single step been taken by them. In some cities, the menace is such that people fear dogs more than terrorists and criminals. Dog terror needs to be tackled,” he said.
He said that people have chosen the government to resolve their issues but the ruling coalition in the state is ignoring their plight. “The dog menace has arguably become more dangerous than the drug problem. Chief Minister (Parkash Singh Badal) had convened a meeting on the issue on May 16, 2012 but the outcome of the meeting is not known,” Kainth said. Meanwhile, BJP leader Rajat Kumar Mohindru, citing data of the World Health Organization, said every year 35,000 people die due to Rabies in India and according to a survey, 36 per cent of all Rabies-related deaths in the world takes place in India.
