Chandigarh : Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Capt Amarinder Singh today said the party would follow “one family, one ticket” criterion while selecting candidates for the 2017 Assembly elections.
The former CM said to end dynasty politics, the party high command had already made it clear that one ticket per family would be considered.
Of the 1,600 applications received by the PPCC, there are 10 cases where more than one person from the family of a senior leader have applied for tickets.
Among the ticket seekers are family members of MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh, Muktsar MLA Karan Kaur Brar, leader from Sangrur Mai Roop Kaur, Samrala MLA Amrik Dhillon, PPCC vice-president Lal Singh, SBS Nagar MLA Guriqbal Kaur, senior leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Dera Baba Nanak MLA Sukhjinder Randhawa.
PPCC vice-president Lal Singh said, “Applying for tickets is everyone’s right. It is up to the party high command to pick candidates. After all, only 117 tickets can be given.”
“Considering factors such as end dynasty politics, youth and education, senior leaders have given multiple options to the party leadership to choose from,” said a senior leader.
Former CM Rajinder Kaur Bhattal said she favoured the move, albeit with a rider.
“There should be exceptions where the families of the candidates have done exceptionally well,” Bhattal said.
