Chandigarh : The Congress today asked the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to clarify its stand on the state capital issue, while digging up a question raised by Akali MP Sher Singh Ghubaya in the Lok Sabha last year.

Senior party leader Sunil Jakhar said Ghubaya had asked “whether the Centre has any proposal to establish a new capital or a mini capital at a central place of Punjab to ameliorate the suffering of Punjabis.”

“On the one hand, an Akali MP asks the House about the move regarding a new capital, but on the other, the SAD-BJP government says Chandigarh belongs to Punjab. How can an MP raise the issue without the knowledge of his party leadership?” Jakhar asked.

The Congress leader suspected a secret pact between the Akalis and the BJP to compromise the state’s interests. “They are preparing the Punjabis for the things to come. The SYL issue will meet the same fate,” he said.

When contacted, SAD spokesman Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said, “The party’s stand is very clear: Chandigarh belongs to Punjab. The MP (Ghubaya) might have asked the question to clarify some doubt.” Ghubaya did not respond to calls.
