CHANDIGARH: Announcing a “principles-based alliance”, former Congress central working committee (CWC) member and ex-MP Jagmeet Singh Brar announced unconditional support of his ‘Punjab Lokhit Abhiyan’ forum to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) here on Tuesday.

Jagmeet Brar (third from left) with AAP leaders Sukhpal Khaira, Sanjay Singh, Bhagwant Mann, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Himmat Singh Shergill and Jarnail Singh in Chandigarh on Tuesday.

At a joint press conference, an emotional Brar sang paeans of the AAP, comparing its national convener and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to Mahatma Gandhi. “We have not seen Gandhiji but I can see many of his virtues in Kejriwal. He is a messiah,” he said.

Brar had been courting the AAP for several months, sending barely concealed signals through social-media platforms Facebook and Twitter that he wanted to join hands with it. He said he had appreciated the AAP’s work for long. “I believe the AAP is a perfect antidote to the corrupt Akalis and Congress,” he said. “This is the beginning of a mega alliance focussed on (the) 2019 (parliamentary polls). It happened after West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee spoke to Kejriwal.”

Asked if the alliance had worked out a seat-sharing formula for the coming Punjab elections, AAP Punjab affairs in-charge Sanjay Singh clarified that “it is more like a tie-up, not a political alliance”.

On the question of his contesting the assembly polls, Brar said he would “support the party without any precondition” and accept any responsibility it gave him.

Brar also extended the support of former Punjab legislators Dr Harbans Lal, Vijay Sathi, Tarsem Jodhan, and Ripjeet Singh Brar, and former Muktsar district Congress president Gurdas Girdhar to the Aam Aadmi Party.
