Chandigarh : Five months after he was expelled from Congress for his ‘anti-party activities,’ former MP Jagmeet Singh Brar, who recently floated Lokhit Abhiyan, on Tuesday announced to extend ‘unconditional’ support to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab. While singing paeans to the AAP’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal, Brar went on describing him as a “messiah on the country’s political landscape.” Brar also referred to Kejriwal as “Modern Mahatma Gandhi of the nation.” Brar gave credit to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Mukul Roy of Trinamool Congress for being instrumental in ensuring the alliance.
Explaining his front Lokhit Abhiyan’s association with the AAP, Jagmeet Brar said: “It is an issue-based alliance with the party, where we are not seeking any position. The only issue is that Punjab’s vote should not be divided and the Akali Dal and Congress should be thrown out.” Asked about the seats sharing pact, if any, Brar said: “As of now there is no such discussion. Rest, I leave it to the senior leaders like Sanjay Singh and Jernail Singh Khalsa, being present here. Whatever decision the AAP takes regarding the elections that will be obeyed.”
Brar had taken along some of his close confidants including the former MLA Harbans Lal, former MLA Vijay Sathi, former MLA Tarsem Jodhan, former MLA Ripjeet Singh Brar and former Muktsar district Congress president Gurdas Girdhar, who also pledged wholehearted support to the AAP.
Speaking on the occasion, the AAP’s in-charge of Punjab affairs Sanjay Singh said traditionally, the political parties enter into alliance and take decision on seat-sharing, position etc. “But in this case, this alliance is based on issues and it is not a political alliance. It is an issue-based alliance,” he said, adding that their main motive is to “save Punjab.”
Praising Brar, the AAP leader said that he was one of the tallest leaders in Punjab and had been a member of the Congress Working Committee and had even once defeated Sukhbir Badal in Lok Sabha elections. Among others, the AAP’s co-in charge of Punjab Jarnail Singh, Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann, party’s Punjab convener Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi, head of legal cell Himmat Singh Shergill, Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Kanwar Sandhu were also present on the occasion.
My sympathies for AAP: Capt
Chandigarh: Ridiculing Jagmeet Brar’s unconditional, unsolicited and unilateral support to the Aam Aadmi Party, PCC president Capt Amarinder Singh said: “I have full sympathies for the AAP. With friends like Brar, you don’t need enemies. That is the reason I have complete sympathy for you.” DP
‘Strong bonding with Awaz-E-Punjab leaders’
While joining hands with AAP leaders, Jagmeet Singh Brar announced that a tweet that he made about three years back in praise of AAP was his gesture of serious thought. When asked that he was expected to join the AAP on Tuesday, but he just forged an alliance with the party, Brar said that there were various things being considered. However, his close confidants indicated that Lokhit Abhiyan could be merged with the AAP at anytime but in the presence of Arvind Kejriwal only. When questioned about the Awaz-E-Punjab, a fourth front constituted by Navjot Sidhu, Pargat Singh and Bains Brothers, Jagmeet said: “I maintain deep regards for all four of them and we are in regular touch.” “Though the formation of the Awaz-E-Punjab was not consulted with me and there was nothing about my joining them, still we exchanged pleasantries,” he added.
