Chandigarh : Resentment against the SAD-BJP government is building up among private technical institutions for not releasing the post-matric scholarships despite receiving funds from the Centre.

Against Rs 172 crore released recently by the Centre, the colleges have so far received only Rs 44 crore.

Congress MLA from Abohar Sunil Jakhar said during the March 2016 Assembly session, Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal had announced to start an online system that would mitigate the problems of the students covered under the post-matric scholarship scheme, but still nearly Rs 500 crore was pending.

“Of Rs 172 crore received from the Centre, the state only released Rs 44 crore and there is no account of the remaining Rs 128 crore. The government must explain on the floor of the House as it concerns lakhs of students,” said Jakhar, who has announced to rake up the issue in the Assembly tomorrow.

The Punjab Unaided Colleges Association (PUCA) has also urged the government to release the funds.

Dr Anshu Kataria, president, PUCA, said the funds had not been fully disbursed for 2014-15. “For 2015-16, only 30 per cent of the amount had been disbursed in some districts. Admissions for 2016-17 are almost closed and another Rs 500 crore will become due in the coming weeks,” he said.
