Chandigarh : Congress Legislature Party leader Charanjit Singh Channi today blamed Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for “demeaning” the post of the Leader of Opposition.

Taking on the government for keeping his involvement as a mere “formality” in the process of appointing commissioners of the Right to Service (RTS) Commission, he said he would take up the issue with Governor VP Singh Badnore.

Though the high-powered committee, headed by Badal has the Deputy CM, Speaker and the Leader of Opposition as members, the names of seven commissioners were reportedly cleared in a meeting (held on September 12) in the absence of the CLP leader who had sought its postponing due to the Assembly session.

Official sources said the CLP leader was informed a day in advance, but he failed to turn up. Besides, the appointments could be cleared by the committee by majority vote even in case of dissent note, they said.

Channi, however, alleged: “I was intimated at the last hour. I needed time to go through the credentials of the candidates. But instead of giving me the details, they went ahead with the meeting.”

Channi had earlier refused to put his signatures on a file concerning the appointment of two PPSC members, saying there was no representation of the SC/BC communities.
