Bathinda : The Punjab Congress today announced that if voted to power, all its party MLAs and ministers would make their assets public every year.
Holding the SAD-BJP alliance responsible for corruption and unemployment, Congress Legislature Party Leader Charanjit Singh Channi and former PPCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa promised that senior Akali leaders such as Sukhbir Singh Badal, Bikram Singh Majithia, Tota Singh and Adaish Partap Singh Kairon would be behind bars within one month of the Congress’ return to power. The duo said these leaders would be punished for their alleged role in illegal mining, the drug trade, the pesticide scam and the Rs 22,000-crore foodgrain scam.
The party also pledged to provide at least one job per family in an effort to wean the youth away from drugs and uplift the underprivileged people.
Bajwa seeks VDCs for border areas
Bajwa urged the Centre to set up village defence committees (VDCs) in every village within 10 km of the Indo-Pak border. He said the committee could be imparted training by the paramilitary forces and given an honorarium of Rs 1,000-2,000 per month. "It will not only form an alternative line of defence but also generate employment for at least 20,000 border youths," said Bajwa. He said the committees could be funded jointly by the state and the Central governments.
