New Delhi : Amid speculation over cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu joining the Congress, Punjab party chief Amarinder Singh on Friday said “anyone willing to accept the party’s policies is welcome”. Amarinder Singh said the issue was not discussed during a meeting with Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi. Singh met Gandhi to discuss the strategy for the upcoming Punjab assembly elections on Friday. “No, Navjot Sidhu was not discussed in the meeting. Anybody interested in accepting policies and programmes of the Congress party is welcome to join us,” Singh, former Punjab Chief Minister, told reporters after the meeting. Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, who quit the Bharatiya Janata Party, floated a new political forum ‘Awaaz-e-Punjab’ last month.
‘Cong high command should take Sidhu on board’
Chandigarh: Congress’ Rajya Sabha MP, Partap Singh Bajwa, on Friday appealed the party high command to take former BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu on board in the fight against “tyrannical” Akali-BJP rule, even as its Punjab unit insisted there were no talks with ‘Awaaz-e-Punjab’ forum.
Asserting he is not aware whether Congress and Awaaz-e-Punjab are engaged in talks or not, Bajwa said if the party is not engaged in talks, it must open communication channel with the Sidhu-led front, so as not to let the anti-Badal votes get divided in the upcoming Punjab polls.
“I want to appeal to Congress high command that it should take Navjot Singh Sidhu on board in the joint fight against the tyrannical Akali-BJP rule in the state,” former Punjab Congress chief said.
“As the former PPCC chief and now MP, I want talks should be initiated with Sidhu for the betterment of Punjab and Congress,” Bajwa said.
