Chandigarh : Aam Aadmi Party’s Punjab convener Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi on Monday alleged that the state government is “politicising” the sacrifice of freedom fighters and “insulting” them by not announcing anything for them during the inauguration of Jang-e-Azadi memorial.
“What is the use of spending Rs 200 crore to construct war memorial when the families of freedom fighters are running pillar to post for government help announced for them,” he said.
“Rather than running away from its duty, the government must renew the 45-year-old freedom fighters pension policy,” the AAP leader said.
Ghuggi alleged that the Badal government, while inaugurating Jang-e-Azadi memorial at Kartarpur on Sunday, invited the family members of freedom fighters but “insulted” them by not announcing anything for them.
Leaders of SAD-BJP alliance kept on praising themselves in their speeches but did not even mention the freedom fighters, in whose memory the memorial was built, he alleged.
“Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal must have shown courtesy to visit the protesting freedom fighters’ families, but he along with his deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal preferred to flee from the venue,” Ghuggi claimed.
He claimed that there is a strong resentment among the people and they are ready to throw out corrupt leaders in upcoming Assembly elections.
“Slogans being raised against the Chief Minister while he was addressing the gathering, itself say a lot. Akalis must understand the anger of the people and stop committing atrocities on the common people,” the AAP leader said.
“After AAP forms government in Punjab, the families of freedom fighters will be given due respect. It is because of the sacrifice of freedom fighters that we are enjoying freedom and their families deserve more respect than ordinary people of country,” he said.
