AMRITSAR: Slamming chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for misleading people of Punjab, Congress legislature party (CLP) chief Charanjit Singh Channi said that it was Akali Dal that made a commitment under Punjab Accord in 1985 to complete construction of the Satluj-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.
Punjab Congress Legislature Party leader Charanjit Singh Channi (centre) with party leaders and workers during Jawani Sambhal Yatra in Amritsar on Friday.
Reaching Amritsar on the last day of his Jawani Sambhal Yatra, Channi said, “Badal must explain why two notifications dated February 20, 1978 were issued for acquisition of land for this canal when he was the chief minister.”
“Badal should give explanation to people, of the statements made by his friend and the then Haryana chief minister Chaudhary Devi Lal in the assembly, about Badal having agreed to lay foundation of Satluj-Yamuna Link Canal,” he said.
The yatra, with 2,000 cyclists from Sri Chamkaur Sahib, travelled more than 350 km in five days passing by more than 20 assembly constituencies.
The aim was fight against drugs, unemployment and corruption.
He said, “I challenge CM Badal to produce entire record on the SYL issue starting from 1955. Let people decide who is really guilty, rather than making baseless allegations.”
Channi said CLP has adopted a resolution to meet President Pranab Mukherjee on November 16 regarding Supreme Court’s verdict in context of presidential reference on Punjab Termination of Agreements Act, 2004.
Through another resolution, CLP demanded immediate dismissal of Badal government for having failed to protect interests of Punjab. CONG WORKERS BURN EFFIGY OF PM MODI
Congress workers, led by state secretary Dinesh Bassi, burnt an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest against his move of imposing ban on currency notes of `500 and `1,000 at Golden Avenue Chowk . The protesters shouted slogans against Modi, complaining that the step is causing harassment for public as they are not able to fulfil their daily needs. Bassi said people are facing unprecedented inconvenience in depositing banned currency notes in banks as all branches are overcrowded.
