Cong Screening Committee to meet today

Chandigarh : The Congress Screening Committee (CSC) for Punjab Assembly Election will meet under the chairmanship of Ashok Gahlot, former Rajasthan CM, to shortlist the remaining candidates in Delhi, on Monday onwards.

Sources in the Congress disclosed that apart from Asha Kumari, incharge of Punjab Congress, Capt Amarinder Singh, Punjab Congress president, Charanjeet Singh Channi and other members of the committee will hold a meeting and take up the candidatures of ticket aspirants who were dropped from the first list of eligible candidates.

The CSC will hold various rounds of meetings for next three days to finalise the candidates to be pitched at 117 constituencies in the ensuing assembly elections.

It is learnt that names of a majority of the sitting Congress legislators have been cleared in the first list. The screening committee will take up the cases of turncoats, new entrants and Youth Congress candidates who have applied for party tickets. The committee will prepare the final lists by Wednesday and submit it to the Congress high command.

The Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who is scheduled to preside over the Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting on Thursday may release the final list of party candidates for Punjab Assembly elections, on Thursday. The Congress, party insiders say, is willing to release single list of its 117 candidates.
