Five days after the attack on Punjab Congress secretary Major Singh Mullanpur, party leadership levelled allegations against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA of the area Manpreet Singh Ayali of being involved in the attack.
The district Congress also lashed out at police claiming that no action has been taken into the matter. Party district chief (rural) leader Gurdev Singh Lapran, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) general secretary Amarjit Singh Tikka and Mullanpur, in a press conference, alleged that brother of Dakha MLA Manpreet Ayali was behind the attack.
Mullanpur said he has been a harsh critic of the policies of Ayali due to which he planned an attack on him involving his brother. “SAD backed people are promoting drug culture in Dakha constituency and were also involved in many crimes, especially Congressmen, of the constituency” said Mullanpur.
He said several sports stadiums being inaugurated by the MLA in villages of Dakha will become white elephants in the coming time. “Local panchayats are supposed to take care of these stadiums, that will put a severe burden on these rural bodies. The construction is a scam in itself as the MLA and the officials have inflated the cost of material to benefit their own people,” said Mullanpur.
Gurdev Lapran said the state Congress will leave no stone unturned to raise the issue of attack on Mullanpur. “Police have severely failed in taking action against the culprits who attacked our party man with sickle and baseball bats. They (police) have been asked not to take action by the Akali leadership as their own people are involved in the case,” said Lapran.
Meanwhile, Manpreet Ayali refuted all allegations against him, stating that the development he had brought in Dakha constituency was never seen before.
“Police are investigating into the matter and they have found many clues. Let us wait for some time and things will be clear. Clubs and trusts have been formed to take care of the stadiums being built,” said Ayali.
He said the Congress was infuriated after seeing so many developmental projects and were selectively targeting him over different issues. “Congress has nothing to prove against me; else they would have brought out some evidence instead of levelling allegations,” said Ayali.
