Patiala : The effort of former minister Lal Singh of Congress to shift his battle field from Sanour to Samana constituency has gone waste as the party high command has refused to accept the proposal.
Sanour Assembly constituency is a general category seat from where Lal Singh fought elections for six times and this will be the seventh time if ticket is again handed over to him.
With the advent of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the election arena the situation has become somewhat hazy. AAP will be challenging Congress and SAD-BJP alliance candidates in tough triangular match.
In fact Lal Singh was aspiring to get a ticket for his son Rajinder Singh which stood rejected by the party. The party is implementing its professed principle of allotting one ticket to one
family.
AAP has fielded Kuldeep Kaur Tohra, the daughter of late G S Tohra, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief. The Tohra family defected to AAP after Sanaour was handed over to Chandumajras.
In Sanour the SAD has fielded Harinderpal Singh son of Member Parliament from Anandpur Sahib Prem Singh Chandumajra. At one point of time Chandumajra and Lal Singh were good friends but now they will face each other in the battle of ballot. Chandumajra senior is as good a politician as Lal Singh.
Earlier, Kuldeep Kaur Tohra had contested from Patiala Assembly constituency in 2012 but had lost to Congress candidate, Brahm Mohindra. SAD rebel Tejinderpal Singh Sandhu has decided to contest the Sanour by fielding his highly educated wife Anoopinder Kaur Sandhu.
As per the 2012 Assembly election results Sanour is having a total of 1,68,956 voters out of which 1,45,11 voters cast their votes. The total turnout was recorded as 85.89 per cent.
The 69-year old under graduate Lal Singh got 71029 votes and his arch rival SAD candidate 49-year old law graduate Tejinder Pal Singh Sandhu got 67127 votes in a multi-cornered contest with nine candidates in fray.
This time the Akali vote will get divided between Chandumajra junior and rebel Anoopinder Kaur wife of Tejinder Pal Singh Sandhu. AAP will cut into the votes of the both, SAD and Congress.
Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra with the support of his father has tried to provide impetus to the developmental works in the constituency which may bring him some relief in the tough contest.
