New Delhi : The Congress is all set to gain strength in Punjab with Navjot Singh Sidhu finally meeting state party chief Amarinder Singh here to signal his willingness to work for the Congress.

The “ice-breaking” meeting between the two leaders was held this Sunday with Sidhu telling Amarinder that he wants to “support the Congress” and would make a related announcement soon.

The Tribune has learnt that Sidhu, a stickler for astrology, will come on board the Congress only at an “opportune” time.

Meanwhile, the nature of Sidhu’s truck with the Congress is not clear with Amarinder today saying Sidhu wanted nothing from the party and was mainly interested in campaigning for it.

“Sidhu didn’t sound interested in contesting the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat which I vacated recently. He has to make up his mind whether he wants to continue with his professional engagements or join politics. I can tell you today that I have met Sidhu. He will make an announcement about his decision soon,” Amarinder said about the meeting. On whether Sidhu will formally join the Congress, Amarinder said: “I cannot comment on that. The impression I got was he wants to support us.” He also ruled out speculations that the Deputy CM’s post had been offered to Sidhu. “Sidhu will come unconditionally. He doesn’t want anything from the Congress.”
