Chandigarh : Gurdip Singh, Non-Resident-Indian (NRI) living in London has complained that a former Akali minister Nirmal Singh Kahlon and his son Ravi Kahlon, are harassing his family members residing in Hassanpur Kalan village, tehsil Batala, District Gurdaspur.

Gurdip Singh alleged that certain elements supported by Kahlon grabbed their 21 marla plot in the village and illegaly constructed a cemented road passing through the plot.

SDM Prithi Singh, on receipt of the complaint, visited the site of December 2, with his staff and directed the villagers concerned not to meddle with the plot.

On December 3, the same set of villagers again started work on the road and SDM revisited the site and wrote to Deputy Commissioner that an illegal construction of road should be stopped. The same group of the villagers on December 4 (Sunday), when all offices were closed, again started laying the road and completed it.

Meanwhile, on December 3, a civil court had passed a stay order asking Jaswant Singh, Pritpal Singh, Gurcharn Singh and Kuldeep Singh not to construct anything in the plot.

The order mentioned Khasra number 37/9, khewat number 97 and khatauni number 216 that belonged to Mukhtiar Singh, a brother of Gurdip Singh. SDM Prithi Singh told Daily Post on Tuesday that the defendants had violated the stay order of the court and were liable for contempt of court proceedings. On the intervention of DGP Punjab, Suresh Arora, NRI’s family were provided with four gunmen who stood guard at the plot which was usurped by the accused.

Ravi Kahlon, son of the former minister Nirmal Singh Kahlon when contacted over phone on Tuesday denied having supported the four encroachers. “We do not indulge in such activities. Are we fools that at the time of elections we will do or support such an act.”

Ravi further said, “What if I allege that Daily Post had grabbed the land? What is the evidence with you to deny my charge?”

He said his father was 82-year-old and had lost two consecutive elections. He did not wield any political power in the state now.

Gurdip Singh, however alleged that Kahlons pressurised the police not to act in time. Now when the possession of the land had been lost to the rivals they were told it was a civil matter and police could not do much in this regard.

Gurdip Singh disclosed that DGP Arora and Principle Secretary (NRI Affairs) Sanjay Kumar helped him to get attention of the administration.
