Amritsar : The possibility of fielding noted comedian Kapil Sharma for contesting Amritsar Lok Sabha by-election, as the Congress candidate, is gaining momentum.

Though it is not clear as yet whether Congress has asked Kapil to be its nominee or the latter had shown his keenness for contesting the by- election. Political analysts are of the concerted opinion that Sharma would be a better choice for the Congress which had won the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat during the general elections of 2014. The party wrested this segment as its candidate, Capt Amarinder Singh, now PPCC chief was able to defeat the BJP’s veteran leader and the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley with a considerable margin.

However, the by-election upon this seat was necessitated because Amarinder opted to tender his resignation as a Member of Parliament last year in protest against Supreme Court’s verdict given against Punjab about sharing of river waters with the neighbouring state.

Despite repeated efforts, Kapil could not be contacted for his comments on the issue and the local leadership of Congress did not come forward to accept the possibility.
