SAD-Cong workers clash, damage vehicles

Patiala : The workers of Shiromani Akali Dal and Congress clashed at the Khanauri Mandi area in Sangrur district late on Friday evening and in the clash, vehicles of both parties were said to be damaged.

According to sources, the clash occurred in Mandi area around 7 pm as the door-to-door campaign process was on

and it was learnt that many persons were injured in the clash.

Punjab Finance Minister and SAD candidate from Lehragaga assembly constituency area Parminder Singh Dhindsa when contacted over the development told Daily Post that it started when their president Ram Niwas along with six-seven party workers were conducting the door to door campaign in Khanauri and alleged that Congress candidate’s son-in-law came there along with around 30 persons and attacked them because of which three of their party workers received injuries.

He said that as the news spread in the area, his party workers also pelted stones on the Congress office and vehicles of both party workers got damaged.

He said that he had personally gone to Khanauri to take first hand information and said that SAD workers Dalbir Singh and Parminder Singh got injured in the clash and they were taken to the hospital in Sangrur, but he did not know the name of the third injured.

When contacted over the development, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sangrur, Inderbir Singh said that there is a report about the clash between the SAD and Congress workers at Khanauri Mandi and after getting the report he had immediately deputed his officials there to take control of the things.

He further said that as per the initial report it came to notice that both parties were claiming damage to the vehicles of their party workers during the clash. He said that now the leaders of both parties were with the police officials and recording their statements and after the

recording of the statements, the police would be able to register a case in this connection.

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal lamblasted SAD candidate Parminder Singh Dhindsa for allegedly indulging in rampage and smashing various vehicles in Khanouri on Friday evening. She said that Dhindsa and his supporters seem to have conceded defeat emphasising that due to this, they are resorting to violence.

She appealed to the Election Commission to providing durable security on Saturday to ensure that people vote peacefully without any trouble and fear.
