BATHINDA: A day after Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh put his lock on the door of strongroom where the electronic voting machines (EVMs) of Lambi constituency have been kept before the counting of votes on March 11, the Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday said the move has legal sanctity.
“Candidates can put their personal locks on the strongrooms as the law permits it,” said Punjab joint chief electoral officer Hargunjeet Kaur.
Not relying upon the EC’s security arrangements, Punjab Amarinder put his own lock on the door of Malout strongroom for Lambi constituency, where he was pitted against chief minister Parkash Singh Badal (Shiromani Akali Dal) and Jarnail Singh (Aam Aadmi Party).
The strongroom at Malout Institute for Management and Information Technology (MIMIT) near here is also under strict vigil by the volunteers of AAP and SAD.
Outside the strong room, paramilitary personnel and cops of the Punjab Armed Police have also been deployed till March 11.
