Abohar : Punjab Congress chief spokesman Sunil Jakhar today urged the Union Government not to allow the Akali-BJP government in Punjab to float bonds to legalise the “loss” of Rs 31,000 crore caused by “siphoning off” of food stocks.

While referring to the state government’s attempts to float the bonds and “put a liability on the people of the state for next 20 years”, he alleged that it was only a cover-up operation.

“The Centre should not allow the floating of the bonds and instead probe the scam and fix the responsibility,” he said, adding that the state government had no locus standi as it had already outlived its term and a new government was going to be formed.

He also demanded that the passports of all suspects and their associates in this case must be seized so that they could not run out of the country.

Referring to the foodgrain scam, Jakhar said Food and Civil Supplies Minister Adaish Pratap Singh Kairon had till September last been claiming that the state had a dispute with the Centre over the counter claims of Rs 27,000 crore. “What happened to those claims of the minister?” he wondered while asking, “Or was it because the minister wanted to get the issue diverted to get time?”
