After rape threat, Gurmehar’s war gets political overtone

Kargil martyr Capt Mandeep Singh’s daughter Gurmehar Kaur termed as ‘Congress’ and ‘Left parties’ supporter on Facebook.

Jalandhar : The ongoing social media war against Kargil martyr Capt Mandeep Singh’s daughter Gurmehar Kaur not only turned worse with rape threats, it also got ended up getting political overtones triggering a debate between ‘liberals’ and ‘Right Wing’ supporters on Facebook.

Gurmehar Kaur, a student of Lady Shri Ram College of Delhi University was being trolled on Facebook ever since she wrote against Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members for thrashing Ramjas College, Delhi students over a conference where Jawahar Lal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid was invited as a speaker.

From using cuss words, obscene language, lewd comments, Gurmehar was also trolled for being a Congress, Left parties and AAP supporter. Gurmehar Kaur said, “I have been getting lewd comments on Facebook and terming me as an ‘anti-national’. This is not correct and it is scary.”

Some Facebook users also questioned if AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal was behind Gurmehar Kaur’s post against ABVP. However, there were others who not only supported but motivated Gurmehar to lead her war on social media.

A post by one Surya Kant Khare on Facebook mentioned, “Her past record shows that she is a Congress cum AAPiya (AAP) cum Communist not to talk that she is daughter of a Kargil martyr (sic).”

“Gurmehar was another Kanhaiya in the making. She will soon support a party and contest election too. Do not be surprised, if she travels business class and attends seminars across other universities misleading the students,” stated one Naresh on Facebook.

Many individual Facebook posts also cornered the DU student for getting played in the hands of opposition parties particularly the Congress, after Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh came out in the support of Gurmehar.

However, those who supported Gurmehar shared, “We are with you, carry on girl.” The Facebook users also hailed the young girl for initiating war against those, who had taken law in their hands and were forcing ‘nationalism’ on others. “Sherni kade dardi nahi (Tigress is never scared),” stated a follower.

Amarinder demands blanket ban on ABVP

Chandigarh : Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh has lashed out at the right-wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for its shameful and despicable rape threat against the Delhi University student who had taken up the cudgels against the student body over the recent violence in Ramjas College.

Reacting strongly to the allegation of Gurmehar Kaur, daughter of Kargil martyr Capt Mandeep Singh, that she had been receiving threats of rape and violence following her heroic stand on the Ramjas College incident, Capt Amarinder said the ABVP and its mentors should be ashamed of their abominable behaviour.

“The girl’s father laid down his life for the country during the Kargil war and she is now being victimised for her legitimate act,” said Capt Amarinder, condemning the alleged ABVP threat as shocking display of total lack of nationalism and patriotism on the part of the student wing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Expressing shock at the brazenness of the ABVP, which had indulged in unprovoked and rampant violence against students and teachers of Ramjas College, the Congress chief ministerial candidate said the reported threat now being issued against Gurmehar by the student organisation reflects total disregard for the law of the country.

The failure of the Delhi Police to take action against the ABVP goons who had unleashed the unprovoked violence at Ramjas College on February 22 has clearly encouraged them to issue such heinous threats, said Capt Amarinder, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and a ban on the organisation to prevent further travesty of the law.
