Chandigarh : The Indian National Congress has been pinning its hopes on its performance in Punjab for its revival in the Centre. Political experts say that if the Congress was able to form government in Punjab after emerging as the single largest party in 2017 assembly elections, the party leadership could proudly raise its head even in Parliament where it is in minority at the moment.

The performance of the party in states including Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Goa and Manipur, will make the leadership decide its strategies for other states that will witness election in coming times, political pundits say.

In case of Punjab where results of 117 assembly constituency are to be declared on March 11, the Congress after facing defeat in 2007 and 2012, had put all efforts to regain the power. It remained a do-or-die situation for the Congress while for its main political rival Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance, to win the election for the third consecutive times was a dream.

The Congress, that remained a divided house till release of the final list of candidates, tried to improve its image with the induction of cricketer-turned-political and former BJP leader Navjot Singh Sidhu in its fold.

Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh even launched flagship programs like Capt Halqe Vich, Coffee with Capt and some others to allure voters. He even made public announcement claiming that this would be his last assembly elections.

On the other hand SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, and party chief patron Parkash Singh Badal is pinning hopes to form the government for the third time on the basis of development works done in last 10 years of their rule.

The four-year old party Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that is a new entrant in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections has made deep inroads. The party leadership is in high spirits and even its national convener and Delhi Chief Minister claims that they would bag over 65 seats and form government.
