Chandigarh: Though it was played at quite late, the card of Congress worked well in checking the AAP stalwarts registering the victory.
The party fielded Capt Amarinder Singh against Parkash Singh Badal from Lambi, though Badal won with about 23,000 votes from Amarinder, the latter’s entry in the poll scene pushed the AAP’s Delhi MLA Jernail Singh Khalsa at position three with him getting just 21,000 votes.
The same way, the party fielded Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu against Sukhbir Singh Badal at Jalalabad. With his entry, the fight turned a triangular one as the AAP had pitted its heaviest weight Sangrur MP Bhagwant Singh Mann from Jalalabad.
Till Bittu’s arrival, there was a tough contest between Sukhbir and Bhagwant, but later Bittu ate up over 31,000 votes and that obviously went in favour of Sukhbir who has now won with a margin of about 19,000 votes from Bhagwant.
Fielding heavyweights against top guns of the SAD also worked as a major booster for the Congress cadre as earlier the AAP was regularly daring them to come and fight against senior and junior Badal to rub off the allegation of being hand in glove.
