AMRITSAR : Promising overall development of the state, Punjab local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu said on Sunday that all municipal corporations (MCs) of the state will be made self-reliant.

Punjab local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu being offered a sword by party workers during thanksgiving visit to his constituency at Mudhal village in Amritsar on Sunday.

Sidhu, who was talking to mediapersons on the sidelines of his thanks giving visit to Amritsar East constituency, said, “We will ensure that the MCs get adequate funds also that they find ample ways to generate revenue on their own.”

“I have already held meetings with authorities of the department and also given suggestions to chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh,” added the minister.

He also hinted that fund diversions done from improvement trusts of Punjab to other parts will be probed.

Stressing on e-governance, Sidhu said the government wants to go to doorsteps of the public. “Why do people have to stand in queues for getting birth and death certificates? The aim is to provide them all services online,” he said.

The minister, who was accorded a warm welcome in the constituency, said that no corruption will be tolerated and people bringing any loss to the department won’t be spared.

TOURISM CIRCUIT

Sidhu, who also holds the portfolio of Punjab tourism minister said, “Places like Amritsar in Punjab have great potential in the tourism arena. We have told the CM that this potential has not been unlocked and now efforts will be made to best utilise it.”

“The government will focus on creating optimum environment for the tourists so that they can spend more time in Punjab, which has many things to offer for the tourists,” Sidhu added.

BRTS REVIEWED, ROUTES MAY BE ALTERED

With over 65 brand new buses under the much-hyped Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) project of the previous Badal government biting dust and continuing to be off road, local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu said the project was being reviewed and changes can be made keeping in mind its best suitability for the people of the city.

The project was inaugurated by the previous SAD-BJP government but they failed to ensure proper implementation, he said.
