Captain not so bullish about Punjab economy

Mohali/Chandigarh : Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Saturday said that he was not expecting any miraculous transformation in the state’s economy which was at it rock bottom, but hoped that things would certainly improve during his regime. “Punjab economy is at the rock bottom, from here it could only go up,” he said in Mohali during the anointment of Lal Singh as the chairman of Punjab Mandi Board (PMB).
The new Congress government has promised to make all possible efforts to revive industries in the study with special focus on agriculture, which is the state’s mainstay. Chief Minister Singh has already announced that lending agencies including banks will not be allowed to sell land of farmers for not re-paying the loans. Making an assurance to this effect on the floor of the House recently, he said: “The government has decided that it will not allow banks to sell farmers’ land for not re-paying loans.” He said that necessary directions on the issue of pending farm loans have been sent to the banks.
According to Governor VP Singh Badnore’s address to the Vidhan Sabha, spoke about the white paper to apprise the common man of the situation inherited by the present government. “During the last 10 years, total debt of the state has increased from Rs 48,344 crore in 2006-07 to Rs 1,82,537 crore at the end of 2016-17,” Governor had said in his address to the first session of the 15th state Assembly. Thus, the new government will have to adopt multi-pronged approach to accelerate the pace of economic growth in the state.
