Chandigarh : Leader of Opposition, Punjab Vidhan Sabha H S Phoolka on Saturday objected to the appointment of a political person as the Chairman of Punjab State Farmers Commission instead of an agricultural scientist.

Phoolka said that it was highly deplorable that a political person like Ajay Vir Jakhar has been appointed to such an important post in place of Dr G S Kalkat, an eminent agriculture expert and a scientist par excellence.

Dr Kalkat had recently tendered resignation from the post in the wake of change of political guard in the state. He maintained that Punjab Farmers Commission has a very important role to play in an agrarian state like Punjab.

Phoolka quipped that the state is witnessing negative growth in agriculture and farmers need to be directed and motivated to come out of wheat- paddy crop rotation and to diversify.

“There are many world famous agricultural scientists in Punjab whose assistance can be sought for the post which requires intensive and deep knowledge about agriculture,” added Phoolka.
