Amritsar : Canada’s Alberta Province Premier Alison Redford has said that her state is keen on strengthening economic ties with India, particularly Punjab, through industry-to-industry linkages, knowledge sharing and increased trade and investment.
Addressing mediapersons after paying obeisance at the Golden Temple here on Tuesday, Redford said more than $102 million worth of products and services were being exported from Alberta to India every year. Alberta also had a large Sikh community that contributed to the development of Alberta, she said.
Redford said two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) were signed between Alberta and Punjab on Monday to enhance trade and investment activities. “Alberta has strong economic and cultural ties with Punjab and these agreements will build on those ties and strengthen our agriculture sectors. A key part of our ‘Building Alberta Plan’ is opening new markets for the resources of Alberta,” she said.
Redford said Alberta and Punjab had previously signed MoUs in agriculture, animal husbandry and education.
She further said that initially, aspects of agriculture and animal genetics were identified to increase trade in dairy production and swine genetics and an Agricultural Working Group (AWG) was established to encourage communication on projects of importance.
