Jalandhar : Reaching out to the masses, the NRI Affairs and Women wing of the Punjab Police on Monday said that with the launch of full-fledged 15 NRI police stations in the state, there was a speedy redressal of different cases of the NRIs settled abroad.

NRI Affairs and Women Wing Assistant General Police (AGP) Charanjit Kumar said that this year as many as 3,700 complaints were received in the NRI police stations across the state out of which 3,000 were addressed.

“Primarily, the NRIs were facing trouble in property related disputes, matrimonial issues and other crimes,” he said.

Addressing a press conference, Kumar highlighted three cases, where timely intervention of the NRI Affairs Wing helped the NRIs in distress. He said that all the cases were solved in consultation with NRI Affairs Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gurpreet Kaur Deo.

In one such case, Deo directed SHO Dalbir Singh to write to the Ministry of Overseas and Indian Affairs for bringing a Punjabi youth back from Malaysia.

“Ram Achal, a resident of Jalandhar, had approached the SHO claiming that his son Ishwar was trapped in Malaysia as illegal travel agent duped his son in the name of a job abroad. The travel agents, Amrit Lal and Shyam Das, had taken Rs 1.50 lakh for sending him to Malaysia where his passport was also seized, while no job was given,” he said.

Kumar said that Ishwar was left fending for himself in local gurdwara at Malaysia, as he neither no job and nor his passport.

“Through the communication with the Indian Embassy at Malaysia, the youth was brought to India while Rs 1.50 lakh was also given back to the family,” he added.

In another case, Jalandhar NRI Police station SHO Shahbaz Singh received a complaint through ‘181’ helpline where an NRI from Italy informed that a culprit had made a fake bank documents and ration card in his name and had taken a loan of Rs 15 lakh. A resident of Tanda Ura village in Nakodar, the complaint of Tejinder Singh was immediately followed by the police and a case was registered against Tarsem Singh at the Sherewal police station Jagraon in Ludhiana. Shahbaz said that a case under Sections 420, 465, 467, 468, 471, 120-B of the IPC was registered against the accused.

Kumar stated that in yet another incident of matrimonial dispute, the NRI Affairs Wing intervened and saved a marriage.

“Ranjit Kaur, a Dubai-based NRI and originally a resident of Malsiyan village in Shahkot, approached Shahbaz stating that her in-laws were harassing her in the name of dowry and that the family had also taken her child in their possession. The woman was sent back home to India without any monetary assistance and her baby,” he said.

Kumar said that the police not only helped in saving the marriage, which was facing crisis, but also brought the child back to India. “The NRI Affairs Wing police did counselling of Harinder Singh, the husband of the woman, after which he agreed for a patch up. Now, the couple was happily united and would be flying back to Dubai soon,” he added.
