Jalandhar : After facing a tough time in locating the whereabouts of Punjabi youth stuck in Iraq, the NRI Sabha Punjab has decided to release an ‘Information Booklet’ with important information about safe migration, matrimonial frauds and property related issues in the all the 13,500 villages of Punjab.

The NRI Sabha, in an attempt to maintain liaison with the rural youth has also decided to appoint ‘Volunteers’ in the villages, who would not only maintain a record of the NRIs in different countries and Punjabis on work permit in the Middle East but also provide them assistance. NRI Sabha president Jasvir Singh Gill said that the booklet would be released on NRI Sabha’s foundation day on September 6. Later, the booklets would be dispatched to village sarpanches and panchayats to help Punjabis abroad, in case of emergency.

Talking to Daily Post, Gill said that the need to publish the booklet was felt during the Iraq crisis, as it became difficult to trace the families of the youth and their villages in the Doaba and Majha regions of Punjab. “We toured many villages while reaching out to the families of the youth stuck in Iraq and felt that there was a need to plug this communication gap. There was a general lack of awareness among the rural people about safe migration. The booklets would be distributed all the 13,500 villages of Punjab through post,” he said. Gill also said that the NRI Sabha has launched a novel initiative of ‘Volunteers’ from villages, who would confirm work voluntarily with the NRI Sabha to inform them about the requisite information about NRIs in their villages. “The Volunteers would be issued I-cards from the sabha. A post-card published in the magazine would be used by the volunteers as an acknowledgement of working with us,” he added.

The NRI Sabha president maintained that even during the matrimonial and property disputes, the volunteers would assist the person in need by bringing them in contact with the sabha. “From illegal migration, matrimonial disputes and property rows of NRIs, the booklet would provide all the vital information,” he added. Especially, the NRIs settled in the developed countries like the US, UK, Canada, Australia and parts of Europe had a strong line of communication but those working on work permit visas in the Gulf Nations were at the mercy of the Almighty. The largely unorganized menial jobs of construction business in the Gulf involved a large number of Punjabis from the villages. Gill said that considering the problems faced by the Punjabis abroad, it was must to develop a regular liaison with the village sarpanches and the panchayats.
