Jalandhar: After extraditing Jaskaran Singh Jassa, accused in the death of Burundi student Yannick Nihangaza, 24, the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police has expedited the process to nab the other two accused.

A special police team had brought Jassa from Australia on Tuesday to Jalandhar where he was produced in the court of Civil Judge (Junior Division) G S Sekhon. He was sent to two-day police remand. Presently, two other accused who were declared Proclaimed Offenders (PO) Rommy Uppal and Rantaj Singh were at large.

Yannick had died in July after remaining in a comatose condition for two years. A student of Lovely Professional University (LPU), Phagwara, Yannick was attacked by a group of youth on April 22, 2012, after which he slipped into coma.

Yannick was along with a group of other African students, when he was attacked.

Though, Jassa had been pleading innocence of his involvement in the attack on Yannick, but Model Town ACP, who was investigating the case, said, “Jassa was present at the site when Yannick was attacked. His involvement in the attack was much evident from the investigations being carried on.” The ACP said that they were waiting for some reports from Burundi after which they would consider to impose murder charges.

“At present Jassa was in police remand under Section 307 of the IPC,” he said, adding that efforts were on to nab two accused, Rommy and Rantaj.

Reportedly, it was also learnt that sister of one of the accused, Rantaj Singh, was married to the Personal Assistant (PA) of an influential cabinet minister in the Punjab government. When asked as to whether, the police was probing this angle, the ACP said that he was not aware, but would probe all angles to nab the accused.
