Agitating unemployed linemen canecharged in Sangrur, 5 hurt

SANGRUR: Five people were injured after the police resorted to a lathicharge on agitating unemployed linemen here on Saturday. Two of the injured were moved to the hospital and were discharged after first aid. The police canecharged the linemen when they forcibly tried to enter the residence of finance minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa.

The linemen were protesting for their recruitment as linemen. Speaking to media, district president Pirmal Singh Sangrur said, “In 2011, the Punjab government promised to give employment to 5,000 linemen in Powercom but only 1,000 were provided jobs.” The rest 4,000 are still unemployed an wited for their employment, he added.

He said Parkash Singh Badal became the chief minister of Punjab for five times, but has failed to adress the problem of unemployment from the state. He accused Badal of not keeping his promises with the common man. Chief adviser Soma Singh Barhe, speaking on the occasion, said due to unemployment two of their members had already committed suicide. He accused deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal of making false statements in the media on claims of removing unemployment and poverty from the state.

He said the government was spending a lot oon surveys to assess unemployment in the state, but cannot see unemployed youth protesting on the roads. If their demands were not met on time they will intensify their agitation, said Soma Singh.
