3 hurt as Akali sarpanch opens fire in Batala

BATALA: Three people, including a woman, were injured when the Jaura Singha village sarpanch opened fire on them over a land dispute near here on Wednesday night. Accused Navjot Singh, who owes allegiance to the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and his aides have been booked for attempt to murder. They all are on the run. Sources said Navjot Singh was at loggerheads with his neighbour Gurdeep Singh over the ownership of a small piece of agricultural land for a few years.

The two had an argument on Wednesday evening, which turned ugly and they along with their supporters allegedly attacked each other with sharpedged weapons. Navjot, who was carrying a pistol, started shooting at the rival group, injuring Gurdeep in his left leg besides hurting Gurpreet Singh and Balwinder Kaur, said a witness. The trio was rushed to the Batala civil hospital, from where doctors referred them to Amritsar.

Batala SSP Daljinder Singh said on the statement of Gurdeep Singh, a case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the IPC and Section 25/54/59 of the Arms Act has been registered against Navjot Singh and his aides Bir Singh, Jagdeep, Subeg Singh, Sulakhan and Laddi.
