Chandigarh : In the Congress circles, a new name, Sukhdev Singh Chahal, has cropped up as a contender for the party ticket for the Talwandi Sabo constituency, where by-elections are scheduled for August 21. Sources said former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had recommended his name to the high command for the constituency. Besides Amarinder, former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal too has endorsed Chahal’s name for Talwandi Sabo, it is learnt.
Other strong contender for the party ticket is Harminder Singh Jassi, a former MLA. Jassi is being supported by PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa. Last time, Jassi had contested from Bathinda and had lost to Sarup Chand Singla, SAD candidate.
Sukhdev Singh Chahal, who is said to be close to former Bhattal, had quit the Congress and joined the People’s Party of Punjab, headed by Manpreet Singh Badal before the last Assembly elections. Manpreet had given him party ticket to contest the Assembly elections from Talwandi Sabo constituency.
In fact, the reason behind Chahal quitting the Congress was that the party had denied him from Talwadi Sabo and had opted for Jeet Mohinder Singh instead. Interestingly, a few months ago, Jeet Mohinder, who had won the Assembly elections, quit the Congress to join the Shiormani Akali Dal (SAD). Following this development, Chahal quit the PPP and joined the Congress again.
Sources said Bhattal wanted Jassi to be given the first preference for the ticket.
