CHANDIGARH: Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday ‘reminded’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi about his promise that the Gujarat government would withdraw its appeal from the Supreme Court against Punjabi farmers over the land ownership issue in that state.

Pointing out the fresh attack on such Sikh farmers, reportedly by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) men in Bhuj, Amarinder said in a statement here that Modi had made an electoral promise to withdraw Gujarat’s appeal from the apex court at a rally in Jagraon (Ludhiana) a year ago, but it had not been fulfilled so far.

The Congress MP from Amritsar also condemned Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for his silence and “forgetting the plight of Punjabi farmers being hounded out of Gujarat”.

REFERS TO ATTACK IN BHUJ ON JANUARY 25
The former chief minister referred to the January 25 incident in Bhuj, where a Punjabi farmer was attacked by local farmers and the land mafia.

“The police, instead of taking action against those who had attacked Punjabi farmers, THE GUJARAT GOVT HAD ALREADY CREATED CONDITIONS TO FORCE THEM TO FLEE. WHEN THE PUNJABI FARMERS TRIED TO STAND THEIR GROUND, THEY WERE INTIMIDATED CAPT AMARINDER SINGH , Cong deputy leader in the Lok Sabha booked them for the incident,” Amarinder added.

“The Gujarat government had already created conditions to force them to flee. When the Punjabi farmers tried to stand their ground, some local farmers, helped by the mafia, goons and police, are now intimidating them to ensure that they leave,” he said.
