CHANDIGARH: Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal said in Khadoor Sahib on Friday that Captain Amarinder Singh’s return as the state Congress chief would not affect the Akali Dal’s prospects in the 2017 assembly polls.

“I don’t see how Amarinder is going to have an impact on the SAD’s bright prospects of coming to power again in 2017. Our poll plank will be peace, development and prosperity,” he said, adding that, “For us, every Congress president is alike, so we are least concerned about the new development.”

In a statement, SAD president and Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said on Friday that by fielding “two-time loser” Amarinder to lead the Congress in Punjab, the party had already admitted that it was no longer in the game for the 2017 elections.

“The Captain has already created a record by ensuring backto-back defeats for the Congress in Punjab. Now, he is set to create a hat-trick of defeats,” the SAD chief said. “We welcome a loudmouth rather than a man of action at the helm of Congress affairs,” he added.

The deputy CM said that like in the past two assembly elections, the Captain would talk big, use choicest abuses against the SAD and then start blaming everybody else in the Punjab Congress for the inevitable defeat in the elections and disappear into cooler climes to enjoy retirement.
