PATIALA: Former deputy speaker Bir Devinder Singh on Sunday slammed deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal for calling Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh an “old, tired babbar sher (lion)” and asked him to keep in mind his father and CM Parkash Singh Badal’s age.

The Congress accused Sukhbir of being so baffled by Captain’s appointment that he had “even forgotten the age of his father, who is approaching 90”.

“His father is presently 88 years old and shouldering the burden of ‘Progressive Punjab’,” Bir Devinder said in a statement.

“In that light Capt Amarinder Singh is much younger and certainly more capable, agile and better positioned to rebuild Punjab from the ruins that remain after nine years of Akali rule,” he said.

“Sukhbir should first relieve his over-burdened father -the worn out ox of SAD - of the responsibilities he is shouldering beyond his capacity, considering his infirmity.”

Singh sought to remind Sukhbir that SAD lost the 1998 Adampur by-election to Congress, which was led by Amarinder. He said SAD lost the seat despite Sukhbir being a Union minister at that time.

“Not only this, under the leadership of Capt Amarinder Singh, the Congress won the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat with an impressive margin,” he added and asked the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to be ready for loss in the 2017 assembly elections.
