Bittu leads protest, faces police wrath

Bathinda: Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu and his supporters on Wednesday joined the protest being held here by eight farmer unions for several days. The farmers are seeking compensation for cotton crop loss. Bittu and his supporters, mainly Youth Congress members, were reportedly cane-charged by the police when they forcibly tried to enter the District Administrative Complex. Several protesters were injured and admitted to the Civil Hospital in Maur.

BATHINDA: Following the statement by Union food processing minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal that Punjab did not need a financial package for farmers to compensate them for the crop loss, People’s Party of Punjab chief Manpreet Singh Badal on Wednesday slammed her for “overlooking the fact” that farmers had been committing suicides and their agitation had been going on for two weeks.

BATHINDA: A Congress protest led by member of Parliament from Ludhiana Ravneet Singh Bittu took a violent turn here on Wednesday, leading to clashes in which more than 20 party workers and six policemen were reportedly injured. Bittu was among those who sustained minor injuries.
