CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab Chief Minister and permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee Capt Amarinder Singh will attend a function being organised by the Umeed Foundation to honour the freedom fighters and to commemorate the birth anniversary of late Rajiv Gandhi and the death anniversary of Sant Harchand Singh Longowal at Sangrur tomorrow.

Partap Singh Bajwa, President Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee in a statement said that “We sought no clarifications please give us none, Industrial houses in Punjab are at the mercy of “Balbanised” Akali Dal and they cannot afford to speak their real feelings publicly. The accusation by Punjab congress that business houses are being coerced and fleeced are based on authenticated and reliable information, as no one will report it through a written affidavit because of the fear of being victimised.”

LUDHIANA: Union minister for information and broadcasting Manish Tewari on Saturday asked the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to clarify its stand on the Punjabi farmers in Gujarat who were being targeted “just because they belonged to a particular community and were threatened with Godhra-like consequences in case they refused to leave”.

New Delhi : Close on the heels of IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal’s suspension for acting against the sand mafia in Uttar Pradesh, the Punjab Congress has decided to raise the issue of rampant sand and gravel mining in Punjab with the Centre. The state Congress unit will demand a central inquiry followed by a CBI inquiry into sand mining in Punjab.
