Chandigarh: Former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal said on Tuesday that directions issued by the state government to its ministers, senior officers and heads of all government and semi-government departments to practice austerity in public expenditure during fiscal year of 2015-16 is “merely a cosmetic exercise to hide its failures on financial front pushing state on verge of bankruptcy.”

Chandigarh: A day after a sexagenarian farmer Surjit Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib district, who had also briefed about his grievances to Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi during his visit to the state last month, allegedly committed suicide, the Congress Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Sunil Jakhar on Thursday flayed the state government. “Farmers had been committing suicide in Punjab and Chief Minister only had been writing letters to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi instead of providing relief to the farmers,” he alleged, while expressing anguish over the way the state government had been dealing with issues of farmers.

New Delh: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal not to “ignore” the plight of farmers and condoled the death of farmer Surjit Singh whom he had earlier met. “Farmers in our country are in deep distress. I urge the Modi-Badal Govt to take action and not continue to ignore their plight,” he tweeted. “Extremely sad to hear of the death of Sardar Surjit Singh who I met when I visited Punjab. My deepest condolences to his family,” the Congress said in another tweet.
